One of your challenges as a family caregiver may be helping your loved one to start and to continue an exercise program. Exercise can get boring for some people, so it’s a good idea to have a plan in place to overcome that problem.
Try a New Activity for Your Loved One
Sometimes trying something new that she’s never tried before can keep your loved one interested in exercising. For example, if she likes swimming, then water aerobics might be something that she enjoys. If your loved one is more adventurous, she might be willing to branch out to a completely new activity for her.
Alternate Exercises Instead of Sticking to Just One
It’s tempting to find one exercise and then stick just with that. For example, your loved one might enjoy a morning walk, so she does that all the time for her exercise. But that can get boring for some people, especially if they’re already struggling to stay motivated to exercise. Consider finding more than one activity your loved one enjoys and then mixing those up now and again.
Join a Gym that Offers Senior Classes
Joining a gym is not always the best answer. If your local gym offers a variety of different exercise options for senior citizens, however, it might be worth looking into a membership. Some gyms give your loved one a trial membership, just to see if she might like it. Exercising in a gym and attending classes can also help your loved one meet new people who are interested in staying active, too.
Stopping and Starting Isn’t the End of the World
Your loved one might find that she has more than one false start on the path to becoming a more active person. This isn’t the end of the world, though. What’s important is that your loved one is willing to pick back up with her exercise plan and give it all another try. Progress is far more important than your loved one following a perfect path to getting more exercise.
Exercise can get boring for anyone, really, but finding ways to keep your loved one interested can help her to stay active. Encourage your loved one to find her own rhythm to her new exercise plan.
